Our Story

Clumpies Ice Cream Co. has been handcrafting the best ice cream in Chattanooga since 1999. Opened by the son of a third generation candy maker, Clumpies has sought to create a product as amazing and one-of-a-kind as the city where it started. The business changed hands in 2013, but our mission is still the same: Serve every guest that walks through the doors incredible ice cream, and create unforgettable memories worth repeating. 

  • Our Process

    Each batch of Clumpies ice cream is made by hand with only the finest ingredients that can be found. From our ice cream mix that we pasteurize ourselves from fresh milk and cream to our house made cookies, cakes, chunks, jams and sauces that we swirl into our ice cream, we always strive to make the best ice cream around. We churn our ice cream in small batches, ten gallons or less at a time. That micro-batch process allows us to care for and consider each scoop of ice cream that we serve.

    The result is a rich, creamy, delicious ice cream crafted with care. It may take longer, but we think it makes our ice cream that much better.

1999

Clumpies Launch

Clumpies Ice Cream Co. opens on Frazier Avenue by Marshall Brock, son of a third-generation candy maker.

2013

New Growth

See Rock City Inc. acquires Clumpies, with big plans for growth!

2015

St. Elmo Location

A second location opens in St. Elmo across from the Incline Railway.

2016

First Full Seasonal Menu Launches

In the spring, Clumpies releases their first full seasonal menu in addition to the classic menu.

2017

New Production Kitchen

Clumpies' production kitchen moves from a small space in Chattanooga's Southside to a large production facility on South Broad Street. The move enabled Clumpies to start pasteurizing their ice cream mix in house and expand its house made offerings.

Southside Location

Clumpies opens its third year-round shop on Market Street across from the famous Chattanooga Choo Choo.

Food Truck Launch

The now iconic Clumpies food truck made its debut at southside grand opening. Now can be spotted around town at local weddings and festivals!

2018

December

Online Store Launch

Clumpies launches the online store, giving the ice cream shop a nationwide reach.

2019

Full-time, In-House Pasteurizing

Clumpies transitions to pasteurizing its ice cream base in-house, full-time. This opens a world of possibilities for new flavor creation and development.

2020

Online Growth

Clumpies' online presence grows exponentially as the shop maneuvers through the COVID-19 pandemic.

2023

Kitchen Upgrade

Clumpies' kitchen gets a long-awaited upgrade, a 200-gallon capacity pasteurizer — double the size of its predecessor.

2024

Celebrate 25 Years!

Some of the goals for this monumental milestone are to continue growing our green initiatives. This will involve transitioning to compostable disposables in our front-of-house experience, introducing recycling and composting both in-front and back-of-house, and transitioning our online store packaging to something more sustainable. Clumpies will continue to make quality ice cream products with the best ingredients to be found!
